I live by the philosophy that beauty starts from within, and I make a conscious effort to fill my body with nutrients through the food I eat. -Miranda Kerr
Mornings can be so short. You have to be on time to work, get the kids ready for school, meetings to attend, appointments to get to. Try cramming a workout, breakfast, putting your make-up on… urgh! Mornings aren’t usually calm. If you are like I used to be, I would be on time to whatever I was supposed to be until my stomach would remind me that I forgot about breakfast. Or around mid-morning when I felt like my body was crashing. I would get better at eating breakfast for a little bit, but would fall back again into the same habit. Have you ever felt that way?
Unfortunately, I learned the hard way. It took me getting sick to prioritize what daily nutrients I needed to avoid that feeling. Don’t wait as I did. There are certain nutrients that we should all include daily or as much as possible in our weekly diet to maximize our health. I’ve always enjoyed morning shakes as a way to include many nutrients and keep me full. I even used meal replacement shakes as substitutes to achieve my daily nutritional needs. But the lack of regulations of most of the shakes I purchased made me pause. And the best ones I could find were very expensive. So..creative mode.
I make my own nutritional shakes. They have been a game-changer for our family. Even our girls drink them, and it gives me relief to know that they are getting many nutrients in their diet that they otherwise wouldn’t. I prefer to drink mine in the morning or at lunch. I’m including one of the recipes below of a basic and easy one for you to try. Yes, I have to mix the ingredients but a time-saving trick is to make two to three shakes ahead of time and have them in the fridge to just grab the next day. In an effort to improve my daily nutrients these shakes have become a staple in our household.
The ingredients are the main reason why I make them. Those ingredients you’ll see listed on the recipe contain specific nutrients that will increase the antioxidants in your body, as well as vitamins and fiber. Some ingredients have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and cholesterol-lowering properties as well. None of it is processed or contains additives and there are even options to naturally sweetened for the pickier taste buds.
I hope you give these shakes a try. They are the greatest way to sneak health into your busy day.
Basic Banana-Berry Shake
Nutritious shake that increases your daily nutritional values.
- 1 T Organic Ground Flax Seed
- 1 tbsp Organic Chia
- 2 T Almond Butter
- 1/2 Cup Frozen Mixed Berries
- 1/2 Organic Large Banana
- 1/4 tbsp Organic Turmeric Powder
- 1 scoop Kale powder (You can make the powder of freeze-dried Kale to add cruciferous value into your shake or simply purchase an organic Kale powder.)
- 1/4 tbsp Cinnamon
- 1.5 Cup Water
-
Add all ingredients to a blender or the shake blender of your preference. Blend until smooth. Enjoy!
You could also add only 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup of ice. Also, I suggest that you use a reusable straw to keep your pearly whites without any stains that could be caused by the berries.
An option to naturally sweeten the shakes is to add a tablespoon or two of Medjool Date Nectar.
